NEWPORT-A high-speed chase with speeds over 115 mph
resulted in the arrest of the driver, Travis Owenby, 30, of Newport, on Friday,
April 26, the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.
When Owenby, of 491 N. Susong St., finally stopped, a
passenger said she did not know how fast Owenby was going "because she was
scared to death and had her eyes closed," Deputy Sheriff Michael Whitmer
Whitmer said that around 10 a.m., he was parked beside
East Highway 25/70 in Bridgeport, using radar, when Owenby allegedly drove by
in a 2001 Chevy Tahoe traveling 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Whitmer allegedly turned out behind the vehicle and it
sped up, the report stated.
The deputy sheriff said he activated his blue lights and
sirens. He stated that after crossing the new bridge on East Highway 25/70, in
a straight-of-way, he was traveling close to 115 m.p.h. and was unable to catch
up with the Chevy Tahoe.
