Cosby tops CDHS

Cosby’s Drew Schreder (left) and Chuckey-Doak’s Daniel Ridlen battle for a header Tuesday night. Schreder’s goal in the 65th minute of the game gave the Eagles all they needed for a 1-0 win over the Black Knights.

Two battered and beaten soccer teams met in Afton Tuesday evening.

Cosby and Chuckey-Doak turned in gutsy performances, despite the fact that both teams were missing key starters due to injury. When the dust settled, the visiting Eagles escaped with a 1-0 victory in the Region 1-A/AA contest.

“We’ve got so many kids hurt, or playing hurt right now,” Chuckey-Doak head coach Anna Ricker said.

“Not to take anything away from Cosby, because I know they are in the same situation. It just comes from having to play so many games in a short period of time. With games getting cancelled on us early in the season, we’ve had to play a lot here lately.”

The only score in the contest came when Cosby senior Drew Schreder got past the Chuckey-Doak defense in the 65th minute and beat Black Knights’ keeper Josh Lamb in a one-one-one situation.

The score came on one of the rare offensive opportunities for the Eagles in the second half. Chuckey-Doak out-shot Cosby 21-4 in the final 40 minutes and had several free kicks inside 25 yards.

Still, the Black Knights were unable to find the back of the net as Cosby keeper Ryan Hatfield preserved the shutout.

“We’ve came off a real tough stretch,” Cosby head coach Dan Schreder said.
