NEWPORT-Despite a ferocious comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cocke County Lady Red still fell to Morristown West on Tuesday, 7-6.

The Lady Red trailed by four runs in the final half inning, but a leadoff single by freshman Mikayla Williams sparked hope inside the Cocke County dugout. Taylor Thornton then appeared to reach first safely after an errant throw clearly pulled the first basemans foot off the bag.

The field umpire missed the call however and ruled Thornton out, saying the first baseman did indeed have her foot on the base and pandemonium ensued. The blown call was one of several throughout the night, none more costly than the last.

They took away the opportunity on more than one missed call, Cocke County head coach Jan Sneed said. I hate to say that a ballgame is determined by an umpire, but its just absurd that you have an umpire out here in the field that does not know the rules and blatantly missed two calls that took us out of innings.

It was a rally killer by taking it out of the kids hands, and thats what I cant justify, Sneed said. Let it still be determined by the kids. Dont take it out of their hands, because thats what its all about. Its about the kids.
