NEWPORT-The E-911 board of directors, meeting Tuesday, April 23, voted unanimously to fire Kathy Cody, who was the director of 911 and an employee of the board of directors.

Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes made the motion to fire Cody, with a second from Newell Byrd.

The board members that voted to fire Cody are Fontes, Byrd, Newport Police Chief and Board Chairman Maurice Shults, Vanessa Dennis, Newport Fire Department Chief Randy Ragan, and County Legislative Body Commissioner Norman Smith.

Cody had been indicted by the Cocke County Grand Jury last fall for allegedly using her position as Cocke County Emergency Communications Director to obtain unauthorized information from the local E-911 database for her personal use.

The 911 board subsequently suspended Cody with pay, and named Crystal Ottinger as interim director.
