NEWPORT-Hugh Hartsell, of Morristown, who harvests
ginseng in the Houston Valley area of the U.S. National Forest, has accused
forestry officials of "absolute carelessness" in carrying out a
prescribed burn in "miles" of forest floor containing young ginseng
"They did not have to do this, and they have
destroyed thousands of dollars of ginseng that I planted," Hartsell stated
in a recent email to the Newport Plain Talk.
Hartsell added, "Any competent person who has a
decent education would know that ginseng, goldenseal, bloodroot, and dozens of
other woodland plants are emerging right now. Pure absolute carelessness on the
U.S. Forest Service part."
