The Parrottsville Ruritan Club's View

Dear Editor,

Over the past several months the name of the Parrottsville Ruritan Club had appeared on the front page of this newspaper, embroiled in the controversy between the Town of Parrottsville and the Cocke County Commission over the location of the County's Convenience Center. The club's position is that it was and still is located on our property for the convenience of the residence of the Parrottsville community.

For those unfamiliar with Ruritan, we are a volunteer Community Service Organization trying to make our communities a better place to live through Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service. When the county approached us about putting the convenience center on our property in the 1990s it seemed to us that this was a real opportunity to provide a community service. Although the original lease expired, we still saw the need for the center and therefore continued to let the county use our property. We regret that our name is being thrown into the dispute between the Town and County when all we are trying to do is provide a needed service to our community.

Regardless of the outcome of this controversy, the Parrottsville Ruritan Club will continue to work to better our community by providing financial aid to the elementary school, college scholarships, aid to burnout victims, sponsoring the Parrottsville Christmas Parade, the County Wide Spelling Bee, Grad Fest, and dozens of other projects and activities that make Parrottsville a great place to live.
