NEWPORT-Newport's historic Tanner School standing waiting to serve again, but the question is "How long?"

City of Newport Fire Inspector Jeremy Shelton led a tour of the building recently for several local citizens interested in the building's restoration and preservation.

While the interior is now warm, dry, and snug, the building still needs a tremendous amount of work done before it can be inhabited again.

"To reopen the building would require it to be brought up to code," Shelton explained. "The abatement of mold and asbestos has been completed by removing the paneling and ceiling tiles in the affected areas. The structure itself appears to be sound."
