911 dispatched target of probe

NEWPORT-Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults, as chairman of the 911 board, said he was seeking an outside agency to investigate an allegation that one of his dispatch officers had been giving former 911 director Kathy Cody cash to hire someone to work in his place as a dispatcher.

Shults brought up the illegal activity during a 911 board meeting this week.

Shults did not name the alleged offender, but admitted it had to be one of the two dispatchers the police department has placed at 911.

Shults told the Plain Talk this week that, "We only have documentation on one incident, in February," when the dispatcher allegedly brought an undisclosed amount of cash to interim director Crystal Ottinger, who has replaced Cody. Shults said the employee must have erroneously thought that Ottinger would continue paying a replacement employee, just as Cody had allegedly done in the past when she was the 911 director.
