NEWPORT-Members of the Cocke County Landfill Committee, meeting Tuesday afternoon, declined a request from the City of Parrottsville to accept the offer of an alternate site for the city's convenience center.

Parrottsville Commissioner Charlene Cureton, accompanied by Parrottsville City Recorder Sheilah Strobel, appeared before the committee to deliver the request.

Cureton outlined the city's reasons for wanting the current convenience center closed and moved to another location.

According to Cureton, the city has invested over $200,000 in its ballfield, which lies next to the center. "This amount does not include the countless volunteer hours our citizens have donated to the project, including 500 loads of dirt donated by Ronnie Hommel," she said. "They translate to $250 per load. But we still can't play ball."
