NEWPORT-Kenneth Richard Schultz, 43, and Karen Joy Sparks, 30, said Friday, March 22 that all four of their small children with them in their vehicle were securely strapped in their child restraint seats when their 1995 Ford minivan wrecked on a rain-soaked Holt Town Road, on Monday, March 18.

The state's Department of Children's Services took custody of the four children the day after the wreck, as well as three other children of the parents who live with Sparks' mother, Betty Sutton.

Schultz and Sparks will be seeking permission from the court system at a court hearing on Tuesday, March 26, at 1:30 p.m., in Juvenile Court before Judge John Bell, for the children's grandmother, Sutton, to again keep all seven children.

The Cocke County Sheriff's Department charged Schultz and Sparks with reckless endangerment for allegedly not putting their four children in child-restraint seats prior to the March 18 accident.

The parents adamantly deny any negligence.
