NEWPORT-Two inmates in the Cocke County Jail were charged
with criminal conspiracy and introduction of contraband into a penal facility
after they allegedly conspired with two people outside the jail to smuggle
marijuana and tobacco into the jail in two separate pairs of pants, Det. Travis
Webb of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.
The two inmates, Jonathan Thornton, 32, of 116 Willow
Brook Road, in Newport, and Randall Stephens, 28, of 166 Cheyenne Circle, in
Newport, were charged on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m., according to the report
by Det. Webb.
A corrections officer allegedly found the two pairs of
pants with the marijuana and tobacco in them, the report stated.
