NEWPORT-Two inmates in the Cocke County Jail were charged with criminal conspiracy and introduction of contraband into a penal facility after they allegedly conspired with two people outside the jail to smuggle marijuana and tobacco into the jail in two separate pairs of pants, Det. Travis Webb of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.

The two inmates, Jonathan Thornton, 32, of 116 Willow Brook Road, in Newport, and Randall Stephens, 28, of 166 Cheyenne Circle, in Newport, were charged on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m., according to the report by Det. Webb.

A corrections officer allegedly found the two pairs of pants with the marijuana and tobacco in them, the report stated.
