NEWPORT-Members of the Cocke County Highway Commission
voiced concerns about portions of Fugate Road during Tuesday's regular meeting.
While discussing a work plan, Commissioner Danny Shelton
reported the need for rip rap along one area of the road. "It's sliding
off," said Shelton. He also pointed out that water is backing into the
road in some areas during heavy rain, creating icy spots when the weather gets
below freezing.
Commissioner Kenny Hall asked if the county could
possibly get grant money for fixing the road. Hall said he is concerned that an
incident, such as another rock slide on Interstate 40, could result in more
traffic using Fugate Road.
"If something happens on I-40, there will be people
killed on Fugate Road," said Hall.
