NEWPORT-On Friday, March 8, at 2 a.m., an inmate at the
Cocke County Jail Annex was ordering commissary items when he allegedly asked
Corrections Officer Joshua Karup if he would bring him some cigarettes, Deputy
Sheriff Karup reported.
Karup said when he said no, the inmate, Gerald Patrick
Burke, 47, of West Point, Va., allegedly stated he would have a Western Union
account with $200 set up for Karup if he would bring him two packs of
cigarettes, Karup stated in his report.
Karup said no, and placed Burke back into his cell.
Burks was charged with bribery of a public servant,
according to the report.
