EDITOR'S NOTE: The Tanner Preservation Committee continues its work to
rescue and preserve the historic Tanner School, one of the few Rosenwald
Schools remaining in America. Many students of the institution used the
knowledge and wisdom gained there as springboards for success in many areas of
life. Many students chose to leave Cocke County and pursue their careers
elsewhere, but took with them fond memories of their days at Tanner. One of
these was Marva Dawson Harbison, who shares her story and memories today. In
observance of Black History Month, the Tanner Preservation Committee has shared
these memories with us.
Marva Dawson Harbison graduated from Tanner High School
in 1960 as Salutatorian.
One of the class's ten graduates, her salutatory address
was entitled "In Today Already Walks Tomorrow."
Marva began her education at Allen's Chapel School in
Parrottsville, the other remaining Rosenwald School in Cocke County. The
daughter of the late Nelson and Nellie Dawson, she then entered Tanner High
after leaving Allen's Chapel.
Over half a century later, she still remembers the close
knit friendships forged among the students at Tanner and also with the school
staff.
Following her high school graduation, Marva entered
Knoxville City School of Nursing and did her practicum at St. Mary's Hospital,
where she received her licensure to practice as a nurse.
