NEWPORT—Discussion on possibly moving the Long Creek
voting precinct has been terminated.
Following a motion by Commissioner Rusty Basinger Tuesday
night, members of the Cocke County Election Commission voted to close talks on
moving Long Creek, for now. The measure was unanimously approved.
The talks of moving Long Creek reportedly started a few
months ago after someone complained about the lack of bathroom facilities at
the current polling place, Juanita’s Grocery. Long Creek residents, however,
pointed out they have dealt with the issue for years and added that Deborah
Boyd, who lives across the road, has opened up her home to anyone needing
bathroom facilities. In addition, portable toilets have been used before and
Boyd has offered a portion of her property for parking on election days.
