NEWPORT-Veterans and their families were honored during
the annual Valentines for Veterans event at Newport Community Center on
Saturday.
The event was co-hosted by the Cocke County Democratic
Party and Cocke County Democratic Women's Club. Even so, the event is
bipartisan, according to Marjorie Ramsey, chair of the Democratic Party in
Cocke County, and is a way to show appreciation for the sacrifices veterans
have made for the country. "When they were out in the field, they didn't
have a biscuit and gravy to eat," she said.
Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults gave the invocation
and Tommy White provided music for the event. Veterans and their families were
then treated to breakfast and given Valentine candy.
Guest speakers for Saturday's event included Emma Alley,
who was with the Army Nurse Corps, and 21-year Air Force veteran Dale Brown,
who is now commander of AMVETS Post No. 75 in Newport.
