SEYMOUR-The Cocke County Lady Red made things interesting on
Friday evening against Seymour but pulled out a tough victory in overtime, 43-40.
The win
gives Cocke County, at the very least, the second seed in the upcoming District 2-AAA tournament.
They could clinch the top seed with a victory in either of their final two district games next
week.
The Lady Red (16-9, 11-1) had all of the momentum once they got to the overtime period
on Friday, but they were breathing a sigh of relief when they finally got to that
point.
Trailing by six with just six minutes left in regulation, the Lady Red had to battle
back to make things close at the end.
Still down by three in the final 20 seconds, senior
guard Jordan Ray found just enough room from the right wing to gun up what would be the game-tying
shot with 11 seconds left.
"That definitely gave us some momentum going into overtime," Cocke
County head coach Jeremy Byrd said. "We had missed a couple of opportunities down the stretch to
make layups but that shot was huge. It was created by our penetration and she calmly stepped up and
knocked it down."
