NEWPORT-Following one of the biggest wins of the season on Monday against Morristown West, Cocke County had to try and avoid an emotional letdown on Tuesday against Sevier County.

The Lady Red picked up right where they left off as they used a hot start offensively to guide them to a 45-41 win over the Bearettes.

Even with Sevier County battling back late in the fourth, the Lady Red (15-9, 10-1) answered with some big shots and solid defense yet again in the final minutes.

“We found a way to win,” Cocke County head coach Jeremy Byrd said. “Tired legs, tired minds, a lot of emotion spent (Monday) night and I knew this was going to be a tough game for both the girls and I. We found a way to get it done, made the big free throw, got the big rebound, and got the big stop or two on defense and found a way.”

The Bearettes (11-14, 6-7) chipped the lead to just three with under 30 seconds to play but an Allison Ball free throw in the final seconds help close out any thoughts of a comeback for Sevier County.

Ball led the Lady Red with 14 points. Mika Wester also scored 11.
