While Mother Nature had her way last week, she showed she still wasn’t done creating trouble with local prep sports schedules.
Friday’s ice storm caused the cancellation of basketball action for both local high schools. Cocke County High School’s game at Jefferson County was postponed on Thursday evening.
As of presstime, the game will be attempted to be played on Saturday at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. for girls’ and boys varsity respectively. The status of the game will be determined by 11 a.m.
The postponement was the third straight District 2-AAA affair that was scrapped for Cocke County High. A January 15 date at Cherokee was rained out and has been rescheduled for February 4. Last Friday’s showdown with Morristown West was snowed out and has been moved to Monday, January 28.
The two CCHS teams will now hit a daunting stretch run on their schedule by playing six district games over a 12-day period beginning on Monday night.
District 2-AAA schools have a 14-game regular season slate, so both Cocke County squads will play nearly half of their district slate in a two-week span.
Cosby High School’s big non-district battle with Pigeon Forge High School was also postponed on Friday night. That game has been rescheduled to be played Saturday night, January 25th.
Action will begin at 5 p.m. with varsity girls’ play and followed at 6:30 p.m. with boys action.
As of press time, no word was immediately available on the TMSAA Class AA Area 3 tournament games for Saturday. That tournament is held at Pigeon Forge Middle School.
Newport Grammar School will not play on Saturday after earning a bye in the opening round of the tournament.
