NEWPORT-For Newport Grammar School seventh-grader Amy
Smith, the word "contrary" proved to be anything but contrary on
Wednesday.
The petite, dark-haired daughter of Don and Maureen Smith
calmly stepped to the microphone and correctly spelled the adjective, described
in Webster's Third Dictionary as "the opposite; a proposition, fact, or
condition incompatible with another" and earned herself a trip to the
regional spelling bee in Knoxville next month.
Runner-up to Amy was fourth-grader Emma Talley, daughter
of Rick and Alecia Talley, and placing third was eighth-grader Charlie Evans,
son of Chuck and Amy Evans.
