COSBY-The Lady Eagles of Cosby High School improved their rankings in the Tennessee Girls Prep Basketball poll by the Associated Press.

Cosby, winners of two games last week, vaulted into the No. 2 ranking in this week’s poll. Union City, last week’s second rated team, took the top spot in the poll by 13 points over Cosby.

Union City garnered eight first place votes, to Cosby’s four.

The Lady Eagles held a slim three-point margin over third ranked Clarkrange in this week’s poll. Clarkrange moved up from sixth after toppling previously top-ranked Jackson County on January 11.

Jackson County fell to fifth place after suffering their third loss of the season.

Summertown, at fourth place, rounded out the top five.

A pair of Cosby’s potential Region 1-A foes also made the Top 10 rankings again. Hampton moved up to sixth place in this week’s poll, while North Greene fell to ninth place. Hampton defeated North Greene on Friday night.

North Greene is one of the two losses sustained by Cosby this year, the other coming to the state’s top-ranked Class AA team, Grainger High School.

Potential Sectional foe Oliver Springs, from Region 2-AA, was in the Top 10 for the second consecutive week in eighth place, despite losing to Coalfield on Friday night.

The Lady Eagles will have to fight through a pair of road tests this week to maintain their lofty state ranking. Cosby travels to Jellico High School tonight and then faces a trip to face Class AA opponent Claiborne High School on Thursday night.

Cosby returns home on Friday night for a District 2-A game with Washburn High School. The Lady Eagles then face a pair of tough games against Class AA foes when host Gatlinburg-Pittman and Pigeon Forge the following week.
