NEWPORT-Those attending the 2013 Newport Rescue Squad
banquet Friday evening got a firsthand look at how quickly these volunteer
responders swing into action.
Moments after the meal ended and into the evening's
program, the Squad received a call for assistance to help search for missing
cyclists in The Gulf.
Within minutes, five squad members had organized and left
the banquet to head to the remote Cocke County area. And, after a somewhat
abbreviated program, more of the volunteers left to join in the search.
What those attending the annual banquet witnessed was
just one example of the thousands of man hours of volunteer time Cocke County
receives from an organization now into its 56th year.
