NEWPORT-Jeffery Lee Stock, 44, pleaded guilty on Wednesday, Jan. 9, to the murder of 19-year-old Newport resident Megan Maxwell before Judge Ben Hooper III in Circuit Court.

Stock accepted a plea bargain in order to avoid a trial set for later this month, of second-degree murder, for which he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Stock also plead guilty to a "C" felony arson charge, for which he was sentenced six years; and to a "D" felony for theft of property over $1,000.

Derrick Woods, administrative captain in the Cocke County Sheriff's Office and lead investigator in the Maxwell murder, said Stock would serve 100 percent of his sentence, which will include time served since his arrest the day after Maxwell disappeared on April 26, 2009. The three sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will have serves a total of 18 years before he is released from prison.

Fourteen more years behind bars

That translates into about 14 and one-half more years in prison, and that Stock, a registered sex offender, will be released when he is 58 years old.

"He got the deal of a lifetime," said Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes in the courthouse lobby after Stock was sentenced and lead out of the courtroom and back to the Blount County Jail, which he has served time on federal charges of violating the sex offender registry, and crossing state lines as a registered sex offender.
