NEWPORT-Even on an off night, the Cocke County High School
Fighting Cocks found a way to victory on Tuesday.
Senior Jacob White tossed in 29 points and
the Fighting Cocks came back from as many as 12 down to topple Morristown East by a 60-51 score in
District 2-AAA play.
In the evening's earlier game, the Lady Red remained in a three-way tie
for first place with a 51-33 win over the Lady Hurricanes.
CCHS, which improved to a game
over .500 in the district, rallied from down four points entering the final period and outscored the
Hurricanes by 13 points over the game's final eight minutes to take the victory. It was a game in
which not much went right for the Fighting Cocks until the final quarter.
“That was one of
the ugliest wins I've ever been a part of,” Cocke County coach Ray Evans said. “We kind of started
off bad and slow, but any win is a good win.
“Morristown East shows up to play tonight and
I'm not sure how serious we were taking the game for two and a half to three quarters, but they
finally got it together in the fourth and we were able to pull it out,” Evans said. “We all finally
stepped up in the fourth quarter and pushed them down a little bit and played better
defensively.”
