NEWPORT-The Cocke County Fighting Cocks pulled out a very tough win over Seymour on Friday, 62-53.

Some solid free throw shooting and defense helped Cocke County earn the victory at home.
The Fighting Cocks continued to carry momentum over from the Midway Christmas Classic and they seem to be peaking at the right time.

Jacob White continued to pace Cocke County with 17 points. Hunter Suggs and Dylan Dockery each added 14 points.

It wasn't always easy Friday though. After Cocke County built a big lead by halftime, Seymour made a late run.

The Fighting Cocks led by as many as 15 points early in the third quarter before seeing that lead dwindle to just two midway through the fourth.

"We finally settled back down," Cocke County head coach Ray Evans said. "I knew (Seymour would) come out of halftime and be really emotional about it and really want to get after us a little harder, especially after the first half. I knew they'd come after us hard."

"Our biggest thing was just to manage that run that (Seymour) made. It got closer than I wanted but we finally settled down and pulled it back out," Evans said.

Early in the season this squad was having all kinds of growing pains, but they are finally starting to see a difference the last couple of weeks.

The togetherness factor is proving to be selling point for Evans.

"We finally decided to play together," Evans said. "We had some things throughout the first part of the season. We weren't playing hard all of the time. We weren't playing smart. We weren't playing together."

"When we were down at the Midway tournament I told them that's our new motto right now. We're not going to let anybody play harder than us, we're not going to let anybody play smarter than us and we're definitely not going to let someone play more together than us. If we do those three things, we can turn this season into a very successful season. So far, they're starting to buy into it a little bit," Evans said.

Seymour led 15-14 after one quarter but the Eagles only scored four points in the second quarter as Cocke County battled back to take a 34-19 advantage into halftime.

The Fighting Cocks still led by 11 heading into the final quarter but Seymour worked their way back into the game.

The Eagles chipped the lead to 50-48 midway through the final period but Cocke County weathered the storm to earn the win.

These close games could help the Fighting Cocks as this season draws closer to tournament time.

"We're starting to gain some maturity," Evans said. "We're growing up a little bit and we're starting to take care of the ball. And when we play together like we have the last few games, we're going to be
somebody to deal with."

The Fighting Cocks host Morristown East on Tuesday evening in another key District 2-AAA matchup. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
