COSBY-In what was hardly a classic game, the Cosby Eagles proved victorious in their opener at the annual Cosby Christmas Classic on Thursday night.
The Eagles persevered for a 41-33 win over Greenbrier despite hitting on only four field goals in the game's second half. The two teams struggled shooting, connecting on 26 made baskets the entire night.
“It was an ugly game, but it was a win and we'll take it,” Cosby coach John Marsh said. “We've played a tough schedule and they're a tough, physical (Class) AA team.
“That's why I think that we had a low-scoring game,” Marsh said.
Lady Eagles roll to win
With a defense that is already making noise this season, the Cosby Lady Eagles turned things up a notch on Thursday night against Greenbrier.
Cosby picked up its 11th win of the 2012-13 season with a decisive 56-12 win in their opening game of the Cosby Christmas Classic. It's the second straight game the Lady Eagles (11-2) have held their opponent to 12 points and the third consecutive outing they've held an opponent to less than 30 points.
Cosby forced Greenbrier into 28 turnovers and limited them to only five field goals in a 14.7 percent shooting night for the Lady Bobcats. Senior point guard Lexi Lowery, who scored a team-high 10 points in the game, had seven steals on defense in just 15 minutes of play.
Greenbrier evened the game at two points apiece with 6:38 to play in the opening quarter, before the Lady Eagles scored the game's next 30 points. The scoring barrage stretched over a 10:38 span as Cosby built a 32-2 advantage.
