NEWPORT-An inmate in the county jail hit another inmate in the head multiple times, causing blood to come out of his ear, and requiring medical treatment for the assault victim, on Dec. 26, the Cocke County Sheriff's Office reported.

Officer Jody Ball stated he went into a holding cell and saw inmate Michael Russell with his head on a mat and blood coming out of his left ear, a report by Ball and Sgt. Corey Ball reported.

Inmate Dominique Tyler Raines allegedly stated he hit Russell because he called him a name, according to the report.
