With the 2012 high school football season in the books, accolades and honors are beginning to roll in for local high school football players.
Four Cocke County High School football players were named to the All District 2-AAA first and second teams for their efforts in the Fighting Cocks' 3-7 campaign. Cosby High School had 12 players selected to the All Region 1-A first and second teams in the Eagles' 4-6 season.
Included in the Eagles 12 All Region 1-A selections was regional Co-Player of the Year, Drew Schreder, who last year was the offensive player of the year in the league.
All District 2-AAA Team: While the Fighting Cocks failed to make the playoffs after a stellar 2011 season, Cocke County still managed to field four selections to the All District 2-AAA squad. During last season's run to the team's first playoff berth in nine seasons, the squad had five players to be an All-District selection.
This year, Cocke County had two first-team selections on the team.
Junior tailback D.J. Haney, who was the leading rusher in the district as a sophomore in 2011, was an All-District first team selection for the second consecutive season. Despite missing nearly three full games due to injury this year, Haney ran for 789 yards on 172 carries for a 4.6 yard per carry average, which was the third best total in the district this year. Haney accounted for five touchdowns on the ground, which was tied for first on the team with quarterback Dakota McGaha.
The other first team selection for Cocke County was junior linebacker Dylan Dockery. Dockery, despite being the leading receiver in the district at the tight end position, was selected to the squad for his efforts on defense.
Dockery finished the 2012 season with 41 total tackles, which led the team. In that total, Dockery had 35 solo tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.
Dockery, who was shifted to an outside linebacker position before the season, also had three pass breakups and an interception, to go along with two fumble recoveries and a pair of forced fumbles.
On offense this year, Dockery made a team high 17 catches for 213 yards and three touchdowns as a tight end.
All District 2-AAA second team selections for Cocke County included sophomore tight end Samuel Hooper and junior offensive lineman Sam Gunn.
Hooper was picked as a second team selection even with his limited action at the position. Hooper made the most of his time on the offensive side of the ball with three receptions that all went for touchdowns. Hooper had three catches that all went for touchdowns and totaled 106 yards. Two of Hooper's scores helped the team race out to a large first quarter lead against Morristown East and another helped seal a victory over Claiborne High School in the 2012 season opener.
Gunn as a three-year starter on the Fighting Cocks' offensive line helped pave the way for a 1,112-yard rushing performance for the team this fall, as he was the only returning starter on a young offensive line this year.
All Region 1-A Team: Despite finishing shy of their season goal of making the Class AA playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Cosby Eagles had a number of players finish the seasons with stellar campaigns. Those players were rewarded for their performances by being named to the All Region 1-A team.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Region 1-A Co-Player of the Year Drew Schreder, who was the 2011 Offensive Player of the Year in the region. Schreder, in his second full season guiding the Eagles under center, threw for 1,829 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 116 of 268 passes this fall. Schreder also accounted for another seven touchdowns on the ground, while running for 173 yards on 56 attempts.
Receiver Timmy Patterson was also an All-Region first team pick for his 21 receptions. In those 21 catches, Patterson had 337 yards, good for a 16.1 yard per reception average. He also scored a team high six touchdowns via the passing game for the Eagles.
Cornerback Austin Horne was a first team pick as he tied for the team lead in interceptions with three and also had 20 tackles from his defensive position. Horne was also a successful offensive player, accounting for 20 catches, 263 yards and a touchdown in the passing game.
Other first team selections included Alex Turner, who was a force on the Eagles' defensive line this year and Caleb Speir who helped anchor the Eagles offensive line. Kicker Robert Lehman was also selected to the first team for his kicking expertise. Lehman was near perfect on PATs this year, kicking 29 of 34 successfully.
All Region 1-A second team selections were headlined by running back Dylan Rone. Rone, in his senior campaign, accounted for 919 yards of total offense out of the backfield. Rone had 701 yards and five touchdowns via the ground on 112 carries and added another 218 yards on 17 catches.
Rone had a 6.3 yard per carry average and 12.8 yard per reception.
Three defensive players were named second team picks with defensive lineman Tyler Norris, linebacker Tristan Ramsey and safety Dereck Weeks making the team.
Norris from his defensive line position tallied 18 tackles and had a fumble recovery. Ramsey had 17 tackles, a forced fumble and one fumble recovery this year.
In the secondary, Weeks had 30 tackles to go alone with a pair of interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Rounding out the All Region 1-A second team selections from Cosby were a pair of offensive linemen. Spencer Holt and freshman Bryson Valentine were picked to represent the Eagles on the squad.
