NEWPORT-A man responding to his mother's phone call of a
burglar in her residence shot a 16-gauge shotgun at the fleeing robber, but
apparently missed him, the Newport Police Department reported.
Jane Gorrell, of Hiwassee Street, in Newport, said that
on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 11 p.m., she heard an unknown person try to enter her
residence by her locked front door, but was unable to and left, Patrolman Josh
Holt reported.
Gorrell said that within a few minutes, however,
apparently same person tried to pry open a side door with an unknown tool. She
went to her bathroom in a back bedroom, locked herself in, and called her son,
Scott, to say someone was inside her residence, the report stated.
