NEWPORT-Twelve first place finishes helped pace the Cocke County High School swim team to a victorious tri-meet with Gatlinburg-Pittman and Pigeon Forge High School last Thursday night.
Cocke County took a 131-125-95 decision in the meet, which was held at the Newport Community Center's Aquatic facility.
It was a big win for Cocke County, as their roster continues to evolve throughout the season. A shorthanded boys squad has left the team searching for points to win meets this year.
However, a change in focus has allowed the team to adjust and began to compete in recent meets.
"At the beginning of the season, we were down-hearted because our numbers were low," said coach Lisa Stepp, noting that the team lost seven seniors to graduation. "I told them if there are three teams swimming, then we need first and second place finishes.
"We can make wins and we can make it happen," Stepp said. "If we can come in first and second, it knocks the other teams out of those places and it can give us the win.
"I think that has changed (the teams) focus a little more," Stepp said.
