NEWPORT-They just keep finding ways to win.
The Cocke County Lady Red continued their winning ways on Tuesday evening as they downed the Cherokee Lady Chiefs, 53-48.
Trailing for most of the game, Cocke County took a 48-46 lead on a Mika Wester jumper with 1:15 left in regulation and then hit some huge free throws in the final minute.
This Lady Red (6-4, 3-0) squad continues to show the toughness and the determination it takes to win in the IMAC. Despite an enormous size advantage in the paint for Cherokee (2-7, 1-2), Cocke County consistently out-rebounded and out-hustled their opponent for loose balls.
And defense was the answer again for the Lady Red. They never let Cherokee's lead grow to more than seven points. They just keep finding ways to piece everything together.
“They have responded well to what I want them to do,” Cocke County head coach Jeremy Byrd said. “Now that's without them or me knowing, and we're both unsure, is it going to work? But when it does work and they're out their busting their tail on defense and making things happen and not giving up, that's what we told them just now. See what happens when you don't give up and you don't throw in the towel before the final buzzer goes off? You never know what happens.”
“We came back and stole that one from them. They led pretty much the whole game and there at the end we got some steals, turned the pressure up, knocked some big shots and free throws down and those last two minutes were the difference in the whole game,” Byrd said.
