End Of Time? Cocke County residents not convinced about doomsday predictions

NEWPORT-Tomorrow's date is 12-12-12, and the world is expected to end soon thereafter, according to some doomsday projections, but Cocke County residents are not taking the claim seriously.

A random survey of local residents shows they believe the Bible's statement that no one except God the Father knows when Jesus will return to earth, and a new heaven and a new earth will arrive.

A documentary was made about an ancient Mayan calendar which led some to believe the world will end on or around Dec. 21 this year.

The 2012 "phenomenon" states that some cataclysmic or transformative events will occur Dec. 21, according to reports.

The date of Dec. 21 is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year long cycle in the Mayan's so-called "Long Count" calendar. According to Wikipedia, a New Age interpretation of the date marks the start of time in which our planet and those living on it will "undergo a positive physical or spiritual transportation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era."
