NEWPORT-Cocke County High School coach Greg Hacker confirmed that he had officially resigned as football coach at the school on Tuesday.

Hacker, at Tuesday night's basketball game with Gatlinburg-Pittman High School, confirmed he resigned on Monday afternoon. Hacker did not elaborate on his decision and declined comment.

Sources indicated on Monday that Hacker, who led Cocke County to a 9-22 overall record in three seasons at Cocke County High School, offered his resignation to school administration in the face of imminent termination in a meeting with administrators.

School officials would not confirm, nor deny, if Hacker's resignation was forced.

“He resigned is all I know and I accepted (it),” CCHS athletic director Patrick O'Neil said on Monday evening.

O'Neil, who took over as the school's top athletic administrator after Casey Kelley left the school for a central office position this summer, said that Hacker resigned on Monday.

“Coach Hacker walked into my office on Monday at 3:30 and resigned,” said O'Neil when reached via telephone late Monday. “We wish him in the best in his future endeavors and we wish him well.”

Hacker came to Cocke County High School in January of 2010 after also being a finalist at prestigious Frostproof High School in Florida.

A coaching search for Hacker's replacement was to begin immediately according to O'Neil.

As of Thursday morning, the job had yet to be posted online with the Cocke County School System or on the TSSAA Bulletin Board.
