NEWPORT-Stevie Darrell Gilland, 53, of 2864 Old
Parrottsville Highway, in Parrottsville, was found dead in his vehicle that was
overturned and submerged in Clear Creek, a little over one-half mile from
Highway 160, in Newport, on Wednesday, Nov. 28, the Tennessee Highway Patrol
reported.
THP Trooper Mike Holt said Gilland was headed east on
Clear Creek Road when his 1995 Toyota 4 Runner struck the side of a small
bridge. The vehicle apparently tilted over and then upside down into the creek
below after leaving the left side of the bridge.
The time and date of the accident on the isolated country
road was not known. Trooper Holt said it might have been dark when Gilland
approached the bridge in his vehicle. There are apparently no streetlights near
the bridge.
