A broken fuel line, or some other gas leak, is suspected of causing a fire that suddenly
spread in a 1986 Toyota MR2 driven by Jerry Kirk, of Midway, on West Main Street,
near "C" Avenue, in Newport, on Thursday, Nov. 8, at about 5:10 p.m. Firefighters
with the Newport Fire Department, located two and one-half blocks away, responded
quickly to the fire and put it out within a few minutes. Kirk said he first saw flames in
the front part of the vehicle; bystanders also saw flames under the rear part of the
Toyota. No one was injured.
