COSBY-Cosby High School senior Drew Schreder has been named one of the two Tennessee State Winners in the Wendy's High School Heisman award.

Schreder, who has been an integral part for the Eagles on the gridiron over the past four years, won the Heisman state award for males out of 10 finalists which were announced last week. Celina Ferrell
of Fairview High School was the Tennessee female state winer.

"This means so much to me," Schreder said on Monday evening. "To have the honor to represent our state is incredible.

"I am so grateful to be selected," Schreder said.

Schreder, who recently set the Cosby single-season record for passing in a season, is the second student athlete to win a Wendy's High School Heisman state winner award. Megan Williams received the honor in 2007.

"This is very big for Cosby," Schreder said. "Anytime that we can be mentioned in a positive way is crucial for our community. I am very glad to be a part of this."

The Wendy's High School Heisman award, which is in its 19th year, honors successful high school athletes that also place a premium on their work in the classroom and their role in their respective communities.

"Colleges want well-rounded students and with admissions growing more selective, a national award like the Wendy's High School Heisman can really help students stand out," said Archie Griffin, two-time collegiate Heisman Trophy winner, in a released statement on Monday. "Drew and Celina are inspirations to others in their school and community, and we're honored to welcome them into the Heisman family."

Schreder currently has a 3.85 GPA, while being enrolled in two dual-enrollment classes this semester. By the time he graduates from Cosby in May of 2013, he will have close to 13 hours of college course credit.

His academic work is always the top priority, even before his first love of athletics.

"I am always one to harp on getting it right in the classroom," Schreder said. "We are student-athletes and you have to notice which one comes first.

"You can't go anywhere without the grades," Schreder said. "Those are so important."

With the other component of the award being community service based, Schreder said he will be on track to log over 250 hours of community service upon his graduation.

"The way I look at it, is that I am the one winning, because in the end - I am helping the community to improve and I am always glad to help out," Schreder said.

The pool of state winners will soon be trimmed down to 12 national finalists. Those 12 finalists will travel to New York City for a December 7 ceremony, at which the national winner will be chosen.
National finalists will be featured during a televised ceremony on ESPN, receive gold medals and a $2,000 award for their high schools.

National winners receive a crystal Wendy's High School Heisman trophy, a $500 Wendy's gift card and a donation from Wendy's in the amount of $10,000 to their respective high school. The winners will also be recognized during the collegiate Heisman Trophy ceremony broadcast on December 8 on ESPN.
