The mother of two students in the Cocke County School System was named in two indictments returned on Monday for violating the Tennessee compulsory school attendance law during the 2011-2012 school year.

The indictments were among the nearly 100 cases heard by the local grand jury during a day-long session on Monday. Circuit Judge Ben W. Hooper II accepted the grand jury's report about 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The panel is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday for the final of its two-day October 2012 session.

Defendants who are facing charges handed down by the grand jury this week are scheduled to be arraigned by Judge Hooper on November 5 in the Cocke County circuit courtroom beginning at 9 a.m.

Miranda Marie Ellison Shropshire, who is identified as "a parent, guardian, or [adult] who has control of the child" is charged with two counts of violation of the state compulsory school attendance law for both children, who are identified in the indictment only by their initials.
