NEWPORT-For now, at least, a solution has been found to
resolve overcrowding in the Cocke County Courthouse and the City of Newport is
to thank.
General Sessions Court Judge John Bell, speaking to the
Public Safety Committee of the Cocke County Legislative Body on Thursday, said
the City of Newport has offered to allow the county to use the city's Mayor and
Board of Aldermen meeting room to stage those involved in court cases.
"They said we can use the room from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Monday through Friday," said Bell.
Bell thanked County Mayor Vaughn Moore, who approached
the city about the proposal and praised city officials for providing
assistance. "I appreciate the cooperation of the city mayor and county mayor to
do this," he said.
The issue was of major concern because the grand jury
will meet and court be held this coming Monday and Tuesday. For more details, please see the latest edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
