NEWPORT-Two people in a pre-dawn wreck on Interstate 40, on Monday, Oct. 22, suffered severe head injuries and were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported.

Richard Timothy Henderson, 20, whose driver's license listed his address as 3605 Henderson Road, in Hartford, was driving east on I-40, when, at about 4 a.m., at the 433 mile marker, the 1998 Toyota Rav4 veered into the median, traveled 1,200 feet on the median, hit a berm (or mound of dirt), went airborne, and came to rest on its side on New Cave Church Road, underneath an overpass, according to THP Trooper Randy Spurgeon.

"The car was totally demolished, and on its side, after it went airborne," Trooper Spurgeon recalled. He said the vehicle looked like it had been dropped from a high point in the sky and crashed on the ground.
