A couple of rough stretches of golf were enough to undo any hopes Cocke County High School senior Cassidy Gibson had at contending for a TSSAA Class AAA individual state championship at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester.
Gibson, who ran into trouble on the first half of the back nine each day of the two-round event, finished in 22nd position in the tournament with a score of 166 (+22). Gibson finished 25 strokes off the pace of individual champion Samantha Gotcher of Clarksville High School. Gotcher, last year's AAA state runner-up finished three-under par and beat Beech's Abbie Gregory by three strokes.
"It was a tough day for (Cassidy) on Tuesday, she was devastated," Cocke County golf coach Boddie Bible said on Wednesday. "She got a lot of bad breaks and it's a hard course to play.
"But she grind it out and played and was able to get it back together," Bible said. "That's all you can do."
