NEWPORT-Cross-country stalwart Morristown West High School again proved victorious at the seventh-annual Smoky Mountain Invitational meet held Tuesday at the Cocke County A&I Fairgrounds.
Morristown West's boys and girls teams both easily took the event championship on Tuesday. The Trojans, powered by overall winner Quintin McKinnish's nine-second victory, won by a 16-point margin over Sevier County High School.
The Lady Trojans won by a much bigger margin, winning by 73 points over Sevier County. Morristown West took the first five individual places in the meet - including a one-two finish by sisters Chantal and Cherie Wilson, finishing 2.6 seconds within each other.
Morristown West's feeder program, West View Middle School, also won the boys and girls 3200-meter version of the event.
The host team also had its share of solid finishes in Tuesday's meet.
In boys action, Cocke County High School - finished seventh of eight teams, under first-year coach Ray Evans. Evans took the helm of the team after longtime coach Mark Hawk stepped down at the conclusion of last season and has a number of girls and boys basketball players running on this year's team.
Ashton Franco took home the best Cocke County boys finish of the afternoon in 41st place at a time of 6:56.9. Colin White and Dominic Keller were just behind him with times of 7:14.4 and 7:17.4, respectively.
In girls action, Cocke County sophomore Mika Wester finished just outside the top 10 with a 13th place finish. Wester completed the 5k course n 7:37.4, earning nine points for the Lady Red. Hannah Miller earned the Lady Red's next best finish with a time of 8:59.8 in 32nd position and
Stephanie Sprouse finished in a time of 10:10.4.
Cocke County continues their 2012 season at the Tusculum College Invitational on September 20 in Greeneville.
