NEWPORT-With the current Cocke County Landfill expected
to be filled within two to three years, county officials are now looking for
additional property around the current site.
The Landfill Committee of the Cocke County Legislative
Body Tuesday requested County Mayor Vaughn Moore to pursue discussions with a
neighboring property owner about the possible purchase of property.
Committee member Calvin Ball initiated the discussion
about the life of the landfill.
Landfill Manager Ronnie Allen said, "They surveyed
the landfill and we've got about 15 feet. They estimated the landfill has
between two to three years left."
CLB Chairman Michael McCarter pointed out that growth in
the area could result in less time for the life of the landfill.
County Finance Director Anne Bryant-Hurst pointed out the
county had a survey done on adjoining property and presented it to the owner to
see if they would be interested in selling. She said the owner initially
discussed the possibility but later "changed her mind."
McCarter suggested Moore approach the property owner
again to see if purchase discussions might be possible. For more details, please see the latest edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
