COSBY-A man led Cocke County Sheriff's Department
officers on a high-speed chase on Newport city streets for over four miles at
about 8 p.m. Saturday before he was apprehended. No one was hurt.
Charles Ernest Gray, 34, of 2941 Bogard Road, in Cosby,
was arrested and charged with fleeing to evade, driving with a revoked license
(3rd offense), reckless driving, possession of stolen property, driving an
unregistered vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving uninsured and
failure to appear/capias.
Sgt. Steve Johnson reported that he observed a white
Chevy Blazer getting off the 435 westbound exit of Interstate 40. The vehicle
allegedly matched the description of a vehicle that had fled from Deputy
Sheriff Danny Hartsell about one week earlier.
When Hartsell tried to stop the Chevy as it turned onto
Heritage Boulevard, the vehicle failed to stop for emergency lights and siren,
the report stated.
Gray then allegedly drove the Chevy at a high rate of
speed, including traveling through a ditch to avoid two vehicles and a Stop
sign, according to Johnson's report.
