DEL RIO-Despite early morning thunderstorms and
subsequent hot, humid temperatures, fans and enthusiasts gathered in Del Rio
for Christy Day, sponsored by the Cocke County Department of Tourism and
Popularized by the novel Christy by Catherine Marshall in
1967, Del Rio and Morgan Gap (Chapel Hollow) give a real-life feeling to the
story of Marshall's mother, Leonora Whitaker Wood-the real Christy-and her
experiences as a teacher at the Ebenezer Mission.
A special feature during the event was the opportunity to
learn about the Christy Spirit Project during a presentation at Del Rio
Elementary School, Cocke County's oldest existing school that is still in use.
The main objective of the Christy Spirit Project, as Dee
Jellicorse of North Carolina, Chair of ChristyFest explained, is to find
"worthwhile" ways to carry on the spirit of Christy while especially
benefiting the children of the Del Rio community.
