NEWPORT-Former Newport Police Sergeant David R. Smith wasindicted by a Cocke County Grand Jury on Monday on a charge of PublicIndecency.

The Grand Jury returned a sealed presentment. The resultsof an internal investigation by the Newport Police Department, into allegationsthat Smith had performed a lewd act inside a patrol car while on duty in thearea of McMahan Avenue in an alley near several businesses, were presented tothe Grand Jury by Chief of Police Maurice Shults.
