NEWPORT-After a near two-year long winning streak, the
Cocke County Middle School Fighting Cocks have dropped their second consecutive
game.
Cocke County was dominated by Jacksboro Middle School by
a 28-12 score, falling victim to a punishing running attack of the Eagles'
Franklin Cordero.
"We still have a lot of things we have to work
on," CCMS coach Buddy Hartsell said. "We've got to get back to work,
become more physical and show some more heart."
Despite having only a 6-0 lead at halftime, Jacksboro
Middle also dominated the first half, despite having only one score to show for
it.
The Eagles ran 13 consecutive plays from scrimmage,
including a punt that was muffed by the Fighting Cocks, than encompassed the
entire eight minutes of the opening quarter.
CCMS finally took possession of the football as Noah
Carter intercepted a pass on the final play of the quarter.
The Fighting Cocks offense however was stopped on three
plays, giving Jacksboro good field position after a big punt return. The Eagles
then scored three plays later on a Cordero touchdown run with 4:16 to play in
the first half.
Jacksboro added the first touchdown of the second half,
with a 10 yard run by Cordero, capping off a 61-yard scoring drive, with 4:11
to play in the third quarter. JMS completed a pass on the two-point conversion
for a 14-0 lead.
The drive was set up as CCMS failed on a fourth-and-five
attempt, coming up one-yard shy of the first down.
CCMS answered quickly though as Samuel Hooper scored on a
44-yard touchdown run two plays later to pull within 14-6 with 3:24 left in the
third quarter. Hooper got the start at running back for Cocke County, with
starter Jack Kyker out due to an injury.
Jacksboro however quickly answered after a failed onside
kick attempt by the Fighting Cocks. A 52-yard, three-play drive ended after a
49-yard run by Cordero, to make the score 21-6 with 2:07 to play in the third
quarter.
The Eagles added their final score of the night with 1:44
to play in the game on a scoring pass. CCMS then put together a 10-play drive
in one minute to score another touchdown as Carter had two runs of 10 yards or
longer and set up the Fighting Cocks with a first and goal at the 10 with a
long pass play to Tyelan Rice.
Carter then scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 43
seconds to play.
CCMS returns to action this Thursday, when
they travel to play Cosby Middle School. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
