NEWPORT-Robbie McLaurin Wilson can cross one more of her
life's goals off the list.
Wilson has been selected to sing 'God Bless America'
during the seventh-inning stretch at Smokies Park this Saturday evening when
the Smokies host the Birmingham Barons in game three of a four-game set.
"I've been singing all my life," said Wilson,
"and I've always wanted to sing at a baseball game. After Saturday, I
guess I can say that I've accomplished that."
Getting chosen to sing at a Smokies game, however, came
about as an accident for Wilson.
"I work at Belks in the Morristown Mall," said
Wilson. "I went on break one afternoon and just went walking in the mall.
I came upon a lot of people singing and wondered what was going on. They told
me they were holding tryouts to sing at Smokies games. When they told me it was
free to try, I decided to give it a shot. Now I'm going to sing at a Smokies
game. I'm really looking forward to it."
The first pitch Saturday is slated for 6:15 p.m., and
again, Wilson will be singing in the seventh-inning stretch.
Wilson is also a member of the Newport Theatre Guild, and
would like to sing on stage during a theatrical production.
