NEWPORT-The Big Red golf squad continues to wield the
right clubs, finishing this past week with two more victories to stay
undefeated on the season at 6-0, 5-0 in Inter Mountain Athletic Conference
play.
The Fighting Cocks started the week at McDonald Golf Club
in Rogersville against IMAC foe Cherokee. The Chiefs were not match, however,
as the Big Red rolled to a 26-stroke victory, 146-172. Senior Chase Atkins led
the Big Red's charge carding a 34, followed by Zach Briggs and Jacob Quinton
both on 37 and Kurt Brooks on 38 to account for the team scoring. The Big Red's
Blaize Sams finished on 39 followed by Brad Burchette on 41 and Jacob Norris on
42. The Chief's were led by Hunter Gladson on 38, followed by Andrew Long and
Chris Weston both on 44 and Chris Lawson on 46 to account for the team scoring.
Christian Willis finished on 46, Sam Nickels on 47 and McKenzie Cobb on 56 to
finish out the Chief's effort.
With Tuesday's home re-match with IMAC foe William Blount
washed out Tuesday at Smoky Mountain Country Club, the Big Red headed to
Patriot Hills on Thursday for a re-match with archrival Jefferson County. After
defeating the Patriots by 14 strokes in the first match-up in week one of the
season, the Big Red proved it was not fluke, downing the Patriots by a mere
four strokes this time, 143-147 on the Patriots' home course. Zach Briggs and
Jacob Quinton turned up their games with each carding a 34 to lead the Big Red,
followed by Jacob Norris on 36 and Chase Atkins on 39 to account for the team
scoring. Seth Moore finished on 40, followed by Brad Burchett and Blaze Sams
both on 41, Jarrod Messer on 43 and Kurt Brooks on 45 to finish out the Big Red
scoring. Nathan Hodge led the Patriots with a 35, followed by Ty Talley on 36,
Jeffrey Chafin on 37 and Spencer Holmes on 39 to account for the team scoring.
Tanner Seal and Garrett Collins both finished on 41 while Jordan Sanders carded
a 42, and Josh Bunch a 47 to finish out the Patriots card.
Meanwhile, the Lady Red welcomed the return of senior
leader Lexi Clevenger, who missed the opening week of the season due to a
tournament commitment. The Lady Red had only one match this week as Cherokee
did not have a women's grouping on Monday and Tuesday's match with William
Blount was rained out. The Lady Red headed to Patriot Hills on Thursday at full
strength hoping to avenge their 22-stroke loss to the Lady Patriots in the
first week of the season. With Clevenger back on the course, the Lady Red made
it interesting, this time falling by a mere seven strokes. Clevenger led the
way for the Lady Red, carding a 36, followed by Cassidy Gibson on 43, Victoria
Barrett on 49 and Jordan Woods on 51. Just as she had done the previous week at
Smoky Mountain Country Club, standout Kendall Martindale came back to the
clubhouse with the day's low score, a 33, to lead the Lady Patriots, followed
by Alexandra Strong on 39, Azlinn Alder on 44 and Rebecca Williams on 48.
The Lady Red are now 2-3 on the season, 1-3 in conference
play.
Cocke County returns to action on Monday,
August 23, when they travel to Morristown Country Club to take on Morristown
West. Tee time is set for 4 p.m. The squad will then take a week off before
returning on Tuesday, August 31 to play Morristown East at Millstone in
Morristown. Cocke County's next home match is slated for Thursday, September 2,
when they host Morristown West at Smoky Mountain Country Club.
