NEWPORT-Three members of the Newport Grammar School golf
squad are spending their summer on the links by competing in the Tennessee Golf
Association Junior Tour.
Alex Hutson, Theo Hooper and Wesley Lewis have been
competing in the Boy's 10-13 Division.
Even though these young linksters have had to battle the
heat and dry conditions, all three have provided some very competitive scores.
In tournament play so far, the three Warriors have
finished in the top ten eleven times, and six of those were in the top five.
Lewis tied for first when the tour stopped at Smoky
Mountain Country Club. He finished on 43 by ended up losing a one-hole playoff,
despite a courageous effort. It was his second second-place finish on the Tour
this summer.
Hutson has put up some excellent scores this summer,
including a third-place finish on 47 at the very difficult Woodlake Golf Club
course in Tazewell.
Hooper is the youngest of the three, and has competed
well while gaining a tremendous amount of self confidence that will take him
into next year's NGS golf season.
Hutson, Lewis and Hooper have competed in tournaments
from Knoxville to the Tri-Cities this summer against some of the state's top
golfers.
The TGA gives young golfers from various age
groups the opportunity to compete in tournaments across the state while honing
their skills on the links. Each of the golfers try to earn enough points to be
invited to the TGA Tour's post-season tournaments in each age group.
