SHERIFF'S REPORTS:
Domestic assault charge
Robert Webber Sr., 58, of Rankin Hill Road, in Newport,
was arrested Wednesday, March 17, and charged with domestic assault, Deputy
Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.
Vehicle reported stolen
Jeremy Mangus, 34, of Keystone Way, said he discovered
his van was stolen on Wednesday, March 17, The 2005 Nissan Altima was last seen
in his driveway at about 9 p.m. on the day before it was stolen, Deputy Sheriff
Derrick Webb reported. A newer model Nissan Altima was found during the night
on March 16, on Vincent Hollow Road, completely destroyed by fire, but it was
not confirmed that the vehicle belonged to Mangus. The Nissan is valued at
$13,000.
Aggravated burglary
Eileen Beagle, 53, of Keisling Road, in Newport, said when
she returned home on Wednesday, March 17, she found the front door pried open
and several items gone, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported. A neighbor said
he saw a car in the area, a four-door Honda with the hood bent up on each side,
and driving it, a while male, about 25 years old, with black hair, straight
bangs, and a moustache, that was parked on the side of the road near Beagle's
residence. Value of items stolen and damage to front door and frame is over
$1,000.
Theft and break-in
Brandi King, 31, of Terry Street, said she came home on
Sunday, March 14, and noticed several items stolen: a pink laptop computer
($2,200), Wii game system ($500), four Wii games ($200), and 11 Wii controllers
($200), Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported. She said an acquaintance
texted her and said he took the items so he could see what was on her Facebook
page.
Breaking and entering/theft reported
Terry Darnell, of Todors Creek Road, said someone broke
into a neighbor's home he has been watching for him, on Sunday, March 14, and
stole a RCA TV (with a value of $450), and other items, Deputy Sheriff Joseph
Owings reported.
I.D. fraud alleged
Janna Simpson, 33, of Sunset Gap Road, said earlier this
month, someone used her ATM bank card from National Bank of Tennessee to pay a
Direct TV phone bill in a woman's name she did not recognize, Deputy Sheriff
Tony Bailey reported. The charges total up to $632.43, she said.
DUI, violation of Tennessee implied consent, speeding,
and failure to maintain lane of travel
Donna A. Lewis, 45, of 598 Wells Drive, in Newport, was
arrested Sunday, March 14, at about 1:30 a.m., on Cosby Highway, and charged
with DUI, violation of Tennessee implied consent, failure to maintain lane of
travel, and speeding, Sgt. Armando Fontes reported. She reportedly talked on
her own will while at jail, stating, "I'm not a bad person. I just like to
drink."
Road rage alleged
Richard W. Berndt, 84, of English Mountain Road, said
that on Wednesday, March 17, he was traveling east on English Mountain Road when
he approached the intersection of Shale Road and a tan Nissan ran the stop sign
at Shale and English Mountain Road and followed him too closely. Berndt said
the Nissan then passed him on a double yellow line. He said he got the tag
number of the Nissan when it was stopped at the red light at Lowe's, Deputy
Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.
Home reported broken into
Michael McGaha, 28, of Barger Hollow Road, in
Parrottsville, said his home was broken into on Saturday, March 13. He said the
following was taken: a Black Knight shotgun muzzle loader ($400), various
women's jewelry ($400), Irwin County High School class ring ($350), and other
items, with a total value of $2,575, Constable Nathan White and Deputy Sheriff
Joey Owings reported.
Truck ran over mail box
Wayne Holt, 63, of Turner Ridge Road, said a man in an
older truck ran over his mail box and fled the scene, on Friday, March 12, Sgt.
Armando Fontes reported. He said he did not get a good look at the truck, and
when he went outside to check his mail box, he found part of a tail light.
Value of the mailbox and post is $50.
Not so neighborly dispute
A resident on Old Sevierville Highway said that on
Sunday, March 14, he and his next door neighbor got into an argument because
his neighbor said the man stole an air generator from his residence. The
neighbor then allegedly started cussing the man and shot a gun several times.
He said he just wants his neighbor to quit cussing and accusing him of taking
his neighbor's property, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported.
Disorderly conduct/resisting arrest
Ann Kelly Turner, of 134 Lawn Way, was arrested Tuesday,
March 9, and charged with disorderly conduct/resisting arrest, Deputy Sheriff
Hollis Emmons reported.
Theft of property
Pearl H. Lindsey, 35, of Dunn Cemetery Road, in Newport,
said someone stole her pocketbook from her 1992 Chevy van while it was parked
at the 411 Citgo on the Knoxville Highway, on Monday, March 15. Items stolen
include a food stamp card used four or five times at Food City (with value of $600), a wedding band ($500),
and an engagement ring ($500), Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported. Total value
of stolen items is $1,768.
Theft of a chainsaw
David Stokely, 47, of Fowlers Grove Road, said that on
Monday, March 8, someone stole a chainsaw from a tool box on his truck while it
was parked at the intersection of Joe Reed Road and Fowlers Grove Road, Deputy
Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. The chainsaw is valued at $800.
Juvenile reported as runaway
A 15-year-old girl left her home on Tuesday, March 16, at
about 8 p.m., and was reported missing on March 17 at about 7:30 p.m. Lt.
Richard Caldwell reported that the girl has run away on a previous occasion or
occasions.
Arrested for alleged assault/domestic violence
Glenn Casey Francis, 40, of 4601 Caton's Grove Road, in
Cosby, was arrested Tuesday, March 16, and charged with assault/domestic
violence, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported. Francis allegedly would not
allow his wife to leave their home and took the keys to a vehicle away from her.
He allegedly physically held her by the arms, preventing her from leaving the
home.
Burned vehicle found
Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury was dispatched to a car fire on
Vinson Hollow Road in Bybee, on Wednesday, March 17, at about 3:10 a.m. The
vehicle was totally burned when the first firefighter arrived on the scene. It
appeared to be a late model Nissan Altima or Maxima, and may have been maroon
in color, Oury reported.
Violation of order of protection
Nona Weathers, 61, of Five Way, in Newport, said an
acquaintance has phoned her even though she has an order of protection against
him. Weathers said the person follows her and shows up at the same places she
is at, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported. The suspect allegedly already has a
case pending in court for the same offense.
Accident on Scenic Drive
Jessica Shelton, 24, of Camellia Road, in Newport, said
she was driving a 2003 Pontiac on Saturday, March 13, at about 10:45 p.m.,
headed east on Scenic Drive at Indian Road. The road was wet and she slid into
a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Katie C. Buckner, 17, of Point Pleasant Road,
in Newport, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported. Both vehicles suffered
severe damage, the report stated.
Vehicle parked at Parrottsville School hit
Allison Hayes, of Warford Road, in Newport, said she
parked her 1996 Nissan Maxima in a parking place at Parrottsville Elementary
School, on Wednesday, March 10, at about 8:30 a.m., and when she left school at
10 a.m., her vehicle had been the victim of a hit and run, Deputy Sheriff
Timothy N. Snapp reported.
Accident reported two days later
Cynthia A. Morgan, 45, of Murray Branch Drive, in
Newport, said on Monday, March 15, that two days earlier she was traveling
south on Camellia Road at Murray Branch Drive, in a 2010 Toyota Corolla and as
she approached a curve, she applied the brakes but her vehicle would not slow
down. She said she was not able to keep the vehicle on the road and it traveled
off the right side of the road through a ditch and into a field. She said she drove
the Toyota back onto the road and to her residence about 1/4 mile away, Deputy
Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Accident on Big Creek Road
Timothy J. Foster, 49, of Highway 160, in Bybee, said he
was traveling south on Big Creek Road in a 1989 Nissan Sentra, on Friday, March
12, when while negotiating a curve at Black Mountain Road, his vehicle left the
right side of the road and went down an embankment before coming to a stop,
Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.
Accident on Lower English Creek Road
Wanda M. Correia, 33, of 465 Ponder Road, in Newport,
said she was driving east on Lower English Creek Road in a 2005 Toyota pickup
truck, on Monday, March 15, when the vehicle left the road and struck a tree,
Deputy Sheriff David Parton reported.
POLICE REPORTS
Theft over $500 charged
Shannon D. Dotson, 22, turned himself in to officers at
the Newport Police Department on Wednesday, March 17. He was charged with theft
over $500 in connection to a laptop stolen from Walmart, Patrolman Matt
Franklin reported.
DUI and other charges
Alfred M. Caskey, 27, of 311 Dykes St., Apt. 6, in
Newport, was arrested this morning (Thursday), March 18, at 5 a.m. and charged
with DUI, light law, and no insurance, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported. McMahan wrote that he discovered Caskey
traveling east on Highway 25/70 with both tail lights not working. An
intoximeter test came out .09, McMahan reported.
Selling and delivery of Schedule II charged
Kevin L. Manning, 27, of 588 Pop Hollow Road, in Newport,
was arrested Wednesday, March 17, and charged with selling and delivery of
Schedule II. Manning allegedly entered the Mapco gas station on Oct. 10 and
sold 20 hydrocodones to an employee for $60. The transaction was allegedly
captured on video from the store's security camera, Patrolman Heather Lawson
reported.
Theft under $500
Kristy R. York, 33, of 244 Woodlawn Ave., in Newport, was
arrested on Tuesday, March 16, and charged with theft under $500. York was
allegedly observed by Walmart Loss Prevention Officer Shane Bower trying to
leave the store without paying for some body jewelry, with a value of $20,
Patrolman William Garber reported.
DUI, other charges
James A. McGaha, 22, of 950 Alder Road, in Bybee, was
arrested on Tuesday, March 16, and charged with DUI 1st offense, light law
violation, and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, Patrolman
Travis Gorrell reported. McGaha allegedly blew a .10 on an intoximeter. An
investigation allegedly showed McGaha involved in an accident with property
damage earlier that day. He allegedly tore down a section of chain link fence
at Gilland's Auto, at 214 East Broadway. The damage is estimated at $500.
Theft under $500
Heather Turner Stokley, 18, of Senior Way, in Newport,
said on Wednesday, March 17, that the purse she left in her unlocked car was
stolen, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported. Suspects were two males Stokley named,
and a white unidentified female with blonde hair. Items stolen included a
brown/blue rectangular Coach purse (with a value of $100), an Ed Hardy wallet
($50), cosmetics, cash ($60), prescription antibiotics ($33), a cell phone
charger ($30), two packs of Marlboro cigarettes ($10), and more, for a total
value of $413.
Theft over $500
Brandon Carder, 19, of Filbert Street, in Newport, said
he was walking on Tuesday, March 16, on 8th Street, at about 7:30 p.m., when
two acquaintances walked up to him and asked him for his Verizon cell phone
(with a value of $369), a Samsung MP3 player ($250), Marlboro cigarettes ($5),
$30 cash, and a black onyx ring ($180), and walked toward Lincoln Avenue,
Patrolman Allen Stump reported, for a total value of $834.
Theft of medication
Kristie Marie Shelton, 27, of Robert Street, in Newport,
said on Monday, March 15, that a Ventolin HGA inhaler in her unlocked car was
stolen. The inhaler is worth $65, Patrolman Thomas Whitfield reported.
Theft under $500
Megan Donnelly, 24, of Driskill Circle, in Newport, said
she suspected a relative of taking her Playstation 3 (with a value of $350) and
$20 in cash, on Wednesday, March 17, at about 3:45 a.m., Patrolman Joshua
Veridal reported.
Accident at Walmart parking lot
Donna Lynn Lee, 57, of Arch Way, in Cosby, said that on
Tuesday, March 16, she left her 2000 Ford Windstar Van in a parking space at
Walmart, at 1075 Cosby Highway, in Newport. She said someone backed out of the
parking space next to her space, striking the side of the Ford, Patrolman
Thomas Whitfield reported.
Hit and run accident at Jabo's parking lot
Chad B. Presnell, 36, of Old Cave Church Road, in
Newport, said that his 2007 Honda Civic was parked in the parking lot of Jabo's
Pharmacy on Wednesday, March 17, while he was inside the pharmacy working. A
witness said a vehicle struck his Honda while backing up and drove away. The
person got the tag and Presnell contacted them, but they showed no interest in
reporting the accident, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported. Presnell said a body
shop gave an estimate of $500 to repair damage to the driver side door of his
Honda.
Theft of property under $500/medication
Jason Muluany, 35, of 7th Street, in Newport, said
medication was taken from his home. There was no forced entry. He said a friend
of someone else who lives there with him was at the residence on Tuesday, March
16, when the pills went missing. Value of medication: $6. Capt. Ronnie Landers
said the suspect has a key to the home.
Phone harassment alleged
Courtney Miller, 22, of Seahorn Drive, in Newport, said
on Wednesday, March 17 than an acquaintance has been texting her multiple times
calling her names, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.
Theft under $500
Joby Mathews at Newport Package Store, at 302 Newport
Highway, in Newport, said video on Wednesday, March 17, caught a customer
picking up a fifth of Crown Royal, putting it in his jacket, and walking out of
the store. Police identified the suspect. Value of liquor is $30, Patrolman
Matt Franklin reported.
Assault and threats
Bernice Cutshaw said an acquaintance told her he would
"beat her down over and over again." She said another person on
Wednesday, March 17, grabbed her by the hair on her head and started to pull
it. All three people had been drinking at Freddy's Lounge at the time of the
report, and all had a strong odor of alcohol "about their person,"
Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
